Working Down to Retirement: 30 – 60

A great number of medical studies have clearly indicated that stronger muscles, good posture and a steadfast balance are the direct result of regular exercise. Exercise increases muscle flexibility and agility and improves speed of muscle contraction and reaction time. A large portion of the participants of these clinical studies who did not do regular exercise suffered many injuries and some even fractures.

For example, people who sit for more than nine hours a day are 50% more likely to have a hip fracture than those who sit for less than six hours a day.

Your mind will be stimulated plus your entire body will receive a work out if you vary your regular exercise routine eliminating the number one problem to any exercise regime, boredom. The more boring your exercise regime is, there is less chance of you carrying out a diverse healthy work out. If you don’t struggle to some degree when you exercise, then you are not exercising correctly.

One of the most important but very often overlooked benefit of exercise is that it helps you to sleep better. When you have a stressful job, are running a household and bringing up children and you are aged between 30 and 60 there is a good chance that you may not be getting enough sleep.

Some other benefits of exercise are as follows:-

1. Reduces blood pressure
2. Reduces cholesteral levels
3. Reduces chances for coronary heart disease
5. Increases efficiency of heart and lowers resting heart rate
6. Makes heart muscles stronger
7. Improves contractile function of the heart
8. Strengthens lungs
9. Stimulates digestion
10. Benefits joints due to stronger muscles.

You will receive numerous other benefits from exercising and keeping fit and healthy.

Generation X

Generation X are confident, ambitious and have a good work ethic. They are also extremely family orientated and put their children first. How do you see yourself as a Generation X?

Generation X encompasses the 44 to 50 million Americans born between 1965 and 1980. This generation marks the period of birth decline after the baby boom and is significantly smaller than previous and succeeding generations.

Members of Generation X are largely in their 30’s and early 40’s. On the whole, they are more ethnically diverse and better educated than the Baby Boomers. Over 60% of Generation X attended college.
Generation X legal professionals hold junior partner, senior associate, mid-level managerial and mid-level support staff positions. They also hold middle-management positions in the government, corporate legal departments and other legal practice environments.

Below are a few common characteristics of Generation X.

Individualistic: Generation X came of age in an era of two-income families, rising divorce rates and a faltering economy. Women were joining the workforce in large numbers, spawning an age of “latch-key” children. As a result, Generation X is independent, resourceful and self-sufficient. In the workplace, Generation X values freedom and responsibility. Many in this generation display a casual disdain for authority and structured work hours. They dislike being micro-managed and embrace a hands-off management philosophy.

Technologically Adept: The Generation X mentality reflects a shift from a manufacturing economy to a service economy. The first generation to grow up with computers, technology is woven into their lives. As businesses integrate new technological tools, Generation X has learned and adapted. This generation is comfortable using PDAs, cellphones, e-mail, laptops, Blackberrys and other technology employed in the workplace.

Flexible: Many Generation Xers lived through tough economic times in the 1980s and saw their parents lose hard-earned positions. Thus, Generation X is less committed to one employer and more willing to change jobs to get ahead than previous generations. They adapt well to change and are tolerant of alternative lifestyles. Generation X is ambitious and eager to learn new skills but want to accomplish things on their own terms.

Value Work/Life Balance: Unlike previous generations, members of Generation X work to live rather than live to work. They appreciate fun in the workplace and espouse a work hard/play hard mentality. Generation X managers often incorporate humor and games into work activities.
